There was this sociological study from called “Negro Youth at the Crossways,” which included a lengthy interview with Warren Wall, and that felt like such a gold mine to me.

Here was the direct voice of a young African American boy at a time when he would have been completely excluded from all other forms of documentation. The New York City draft riots: their significance for American society and politics in the age of the Civil War.
